The Ins and Outs of Nutrition After Bariatric Surgery

Nutrition After Bariatric Surgery

We Support You Every Step of the Way

When we ask patients about the biggest barriers surrounding their decision to have bariatric surgery, we hear a lot about fears; fear of failing, fear of the surgery itself, fear of people thinking surgery is the easy way out. Another big one? Fear of what a relationship with food will look like after bariatric surgery; specifically, How will I know what to eat? How much can I eat? What shouldn’t I eat? Am I getting the vitamins and minerals my body needs?

These are real concerns. And we’re glad when our patients bring them up because it means they are thinking long term. And that’s a good thing!

Bariatric surgery is not a quick fix, magic button solution for obesity. Does the surgery help with the mechanics of losing weight? Certainly. But, bariatric surgery requires a lifelong commitment to eating in a way that supports the goal of maintaining a healthy weight for a lifetime.

But don’t worry. You’ve got this. And we’ve got you.

More than a tagline, You’ve got this. And we’ve got you means two important things to us at Weight Loss Specialists of North Texas: First, we believe in you. We know you can do it. You can achieve a healthy body weight, and you can maintain it for a lifetime. Yes, you can! And the second thing? We are going to be here for you every step of the way. And that includes dietary support before and after bariatric surgery.

Nutrition After Bariatric Surgery

At Weight Loss Specialists, we have registered dieticians on our team who work with all of our patients, those who have had surgery and those who are losing weight with the aid of medications and/or lifestyle modifications. From help with hydration, nutrition, supplements, diet progression and strategies for success, our experienced registered dieticians have you covered.

Many of our surgical patients have the duodenal switch, a complex procedure that combines restrictive and malabsorptive elements of weight loss surgery. We love this procedure because it enjoys a very high success rate long term. Many patients prefer the duodenal switch as they can eat normal portioned meals after the procedure, and a diet rich in protein and fat is even recommended! But because of the nature of the procedure, nutrition is very important. And our LiveFree Vitamins makes it easy to get the supplements and vitamins you need to support your health journey.

Support After Bariatric Surgery

Aside from meeting with your Weight Loss Specialists dietician to make sure your diet supports your goals and your dietary needs post-surgery, we also offer support groups, where you can meet regularly with other patients who had the same procedure as you to talk about challenges and victories as well as share tips and even recipes.

We have support groups that meet all over the Metroplex. They’re made up of people just like you who have lost weight with our help (some with weight loss surgery, some with focused diet and exercise with nutritional support, some with weight loss medication and some with a variety of tools). What every person has in common is the desire to maintain a healthy weight for a lifetime. Get plugged in.
