Planning Your Bariatric Surgery: From A to Z

What does 2022 have in store for you? A new job? A move? A fresh outlook? What if this was the year you finally realize your dream of losing a significant amount of weight? It can be! Advances in the field of bariatric surgery are helping more people than ever to achieve and maintain a healthy weight for a lifetime. If exploring bariatric surgery is part of your 2022 plan, we’re so excited for you! At Weight Loss Specialists of North Texas, we’ve helped thousands of people just like you step into a healthy life as the person they always wanted to be, knew they could be, but just needed some help to get there.

The decision to have bariatric surgery is a big one. We get it. It is absolutely a life-changing move that comes with a lifetime commitment. There are many factors to consider and evaluate when starting on this journey.

Fortunately, we know this journey inside out and backwards and forwards. We are a guide you can trust. Let’s go through the top considerations.

Are You a Candidate for Bariatric Surgery?

Bariatric surgery is not for the casual dieter and there are several requirements that you will need to meet in order to be considered. First, we need to know your height and weight. This will allow us to calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is an indicator used globally to indicate a healthy weight. An optimal BMI ranges from about 18-24.

To be considered a candidate for surgical weight loss, you must have failed in at least one valid attempt at medical weight loss treatment. You will also typically have one or more of the following scenarios:

100 pounds or more over ideal body weight
Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or greater
At least 75 pounds over ideal body weight (BMI over 35) with at least one serious obesity-related disease

Will Insurance Pay for Your Bariatric Surgery?

In many cases, the answer is yes! We can help you determine the scope of your insurance benefits and coverage, as well as help you meet any bariatric surgery qualifying requirements your insurance company may have. Our insurance experts are well versed in working with most major insurance companies.

And even if you don’t qualify for coverage, we have great connections with reputable financing companies who have been very helpful in working with our patients in the past. Don’t let cost be a barrier to getting much-needed bariatric surgery! We can help.

Will There be Out-of-Pocket Expenses for Your Bariatric Surgery?

It depends. Coverage is different for different insurance plans, and our experienced insurance specialists can help you determine exactly how much of your procedure costs will be covered by your insurance plan.

But even if you don’t qualify for insurance coverage or if your plan only covers a portion of your procedure, we never want cost to be the reason you stop achieving your weight loss goals. We are proud to offer CareCredit financing to our patients. Simply complete their online application and submit for approval.

What Should You Expect After Bariatric Surgery?

The first thing you can expect is weight loss. Yay! And if you have weight-related medical conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes or sleep apnea, those conditions will likely improve or even resolve.

The amount of weight loss people experience varies to some degree depending on the type of bariatric surgery procedure performed. In general, the weight loss is greater with a more malabsorptive operation and less with a purely restrictive operation. The greater the degree of malabsorption caused by a weight loss operation, the greater your weight loss.

Most patients will achieve a steady weight within 12 to 24 months of their weight loss surgery. Again, this may vary depending on the patient’s starting weight at the time of surgery, the procedure that they choose, and how closely they comply with the dietary and exercise recommendations.
