Eating After Gastric Bypass

After weight loss surgery, you may be wondering what types of food you should eat. You already know that you need to change your diet in order to ensure long-term, weight loss success. But finding the right balance of foods following bariatric surgery can be challenging, especially during the initial recovery period. Read on for a quick guide to the best foods for your body after weight loss surgery.

1. Lean protein.

Gastric bypass surgery reduces our body’s ability to absorb fat, protein and other nutrients. Roughly 25% of the protein you eat will pass through your body without being absorbed. Because of this, you’ll need to make a concerted effort to consume at least 60 to 80 grams of protein every day. As you recover from surgery, your diet may initially consist of fat-free, refried beans, scrambled eggs and pureed meats. When you are able to eat solid foods again, focus on high-protein, heart-healthy options such as salmon (rich in Omega-3 fatty acids), lean turkey and skinless chicken.

2. Low-fat dairy.

Another great source of protein (along with calcium and Vitamin D) is low-fat dairy or fat-free dairy products. While recovering from bariatric surgery, non-fat yogurt, skim milk and cottage cheese are all good choices. Whey protein powders can also boost your protein intake.

3. Fruits and vegetables.

The more, the merrier! Fruits and vegetables are critical source of fiber, vitamins and anti-oxidants. When first recovering, try pureed vegetables or sugar-free applesauce. When you can tolerate solid foods, look for nutrient and anti-oxidant rich fruits like pomegranates, blueberries and apples.

4. Whole grains.

Say goodbye to white bread and sugar-filled pastries and hello to whole-wheat bread, brown rice, and oatmeal! These grains will keep you feeling full, longer and contain important nutrients. Since pastas and soft breads may stick in the stomach opening, you may want to delay eating these until a few months after your surgery has passed.
