The 4 Proven Ways to Lose Weight – #3: Gastric Balloons

Gastric Balloon System

If you have a BMI of 30-40 and do either do not want, or do not qualify for weight loss surgery, a new category of medical devices might be your answer for immediate and long lasting weight loss.

The FDA approved Obalon balloon system is a new treatment that involves swallowing up to three balloon-filled capsules. The capsules are then inflated in your stomach to take up space so you feel full and eat less.

Patients swallow individual capsules three weeks apart under the supervision of a doctor. The placement of each gastric balloon typically takes less than 10 minutes and doesn’t require sedation.

Gas is then pumped through the catheter, filling the balloon up. The catheter is removed, and the patient goes home with a small inflated balloon(s) in their stomach. A fully inflated single gastric balloon has a volume of 250cc, weighing approximately 3 grams (less than a penny) and about the size of a small orange. Therefore, all three gastric balloons have a combined volume of 750cc.

Three balloon treatment is combined with a professionally supervised nutrition and exercise program for optimal weight loss.  All balloons are removed within 6 months of the first placement.

Although results vary, In recent studies the Obalon balloon system helped patients shed almost twice the weight compared to those who made diet and lifestyle changes alone.  Furthermore, an average of 89% of weight loss was kept off six months after balloons were removed, when combined with a moderate intensity diet and exercise program.
